The rate in the Central districts was 30.7, in the South 18.1,
and in the West 18.2. This is a heavy increase all round, but it
is in some measure accounted for by tho inclusion in the London
Mortality, this year for the first time, of tho deaths of Londoners
that occurred in certain Institutions outside tho area of Registration
London, namely tho Lunatic and Imbecilo Asylums at Banstead
Caterham, Cane Hill, Darenth, Stono, Hanwell, Colney Hatch and
Leavesden. The Registrar General says "Tho deaths in these
Institutions are indisputably tho deaths of Londoners, and should
bo included in the London death rate;" accordingly I havo included
tho deaths of our own parishioners occurring in these Asylums
in like manner.
In the following table aro comparod tho mortality rates for
Bethnal Green and for London by quarters.

than that of last year by 0.45, but is considerably greater than the
General Metropolitan rate which was 29.1, tho lowest birth rate
yet recorded in London, the rate having fallen continuously year
by year since 1879, when it was 35.5 per thousand.
