TRAMWAYS.
The North Metropolitan Tramways Company deposited a plan
shewing proposed double tram lines from their lines in Shoreditch, at
the wostern end of Bethnal Green Road, to their lines in Cambridge
Road, at the east end of Bethnal Green Road.
At the meeting on the 3rd January, a deputation from ratepayers
in Bethnal Green Road attended and presented a memorial in
opposition to the proposal to lay tramways in Bethnal Green Road.
Mr. Wildey Wright appeared as Counsel for the memorialists, and
addressed the Vestry in support of the memorial. It was referred to
a committee of the whole Vestry to consider the memorial, and also to
consider and report whether it was desirable that tramways should be
laid down in Bethnal Green Road, and generally as to the scheme of
the Tramway Company.
The Committee of the Whole Vestry, after having been attended by
the Solicitor, and the Assistant Engineer of the Tramway Company,
and by a deputation from Ratepayers, recommended:
"That the consent of the Vestry to the proposed scheme for laying tram lines in
Bethnal Green Road be refused, and that the Bill proposed to be introduced to authorise
the construction of the tramway, be opposed by the Vestry."
The proposed Bill was introduced into Parliament, but ultimately
the part relating to Bethnal Green was withdrawn.
METROPOLITAN RAILWAY COMPANY AND THE
LONDON, TILBURY & SOUTHEND RAILWAY COMPANY.
A plan was deposited, shewing a proposed line which would pass
under Whitechapel Road, including the small portion of that road in
this parish. The requisite attention as to making provision with
regard to sewers and drains was given, but the bill introduced was
abandoned, so far as it related to the formation of the line under
Whitechapel road.
GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY COMPANY.
The Vestry presented a Petition to Parliament in favour of the
clause in a bill by the Company, authorising the establishment of a
market or depot at the Brick Lane Goods Station, but Parliament did
not confer the desired authority, and it seems that the Railway
Company can be effectually restrained from establishing a market, as
it would be an infraction of rights conferred by Old Charters.
