PEEL GROVE CEMETERY.
In June, 1882, a deputation attended the Vestry and presented a
memorial, alloging that the vacant ground on tho oast side of Peel
Grove, formerly used as a cemetery, had become a nuisance from being
frequently let for shows or exhibitions of a low character, causing
noiso and leading to indecent scenes. Tho memorial was referred to
tho Sanitary Committee, who reported that, in addition to the nuisance
caused by the shows, filth and garbage were deposited on the ground.
Tho committeo recommended that the owner of tho ground should be
required to hoard it in, and that if he failed to do so the Vestry should
erect tho hoarding at tho cost of the owner, and it was referred to the
Sanitary Committee to take tho necessary steps with reference to tho
hoarding.
Tho ground being again lot for a circus—causing a very great
nuisance—tho Clerk was directed to take steps to compol the removal
of it. Notices servod boing disregarded, the Clerk issued a writ,
claiming the penalty of £100 under the Act of 25th Geo. II., cap. 36,
and also took the preliminary steps, in conjunction with the Overseers,
for prosecuting, under the same Act, the owner of tho circus. He
then moved away.
After formal notice to Mr. Gibbons, tho owner of Peel grove,
requiring him to erect tho necessary hoarding, and a long subsequent
correspondence with him, in which ho promised to erect it, tho Vestry
erected it at a cost of £26 12s. Mr. Gibbons not having paid the
amount, an action to recover it has been brought against him, and is
now pending.
