The owners of the factory at the north end of Peel grove have, with
the view of obviating a nuisance, been permitted to enclose with a
fence and gates the recess at the north-east corner, on condition of
paying the Vestry £1 1s. a year.
The Vestry declined an offer made to lay out the old Cemetery as a
pleasure ground if the Vestry would purchase the ground and provide
for its future maintenance as a recreation ground.
At the end of February the Vestry received from Messrs. Hills aud
Fletcher, the Architects of Mr. George Chambers, a plan, shewing a
proposed new street to be formed, and houses to be built on the
ground. At the Yestry meeting on the 1st March the Sanitary
Committee reported they had visited the ground with the Medical
Officer of Health, and found excavations were being made previous to
building, and recommended that the sanction of the Yestry to any
building scheme be withheld until all the human remains have been
removed to the satisfaction of the Medical Officer, and that the Clerk
be instructed to communicate with the proper authorities, with a view
of obtaining their assistance in the matter.
At the same meeting a deputation from residents in Peel grove and
places adjacent attended, and complained of the smell from something
burning day and night on the vacant ground.
The Yestry have caused letters to be addressed to the Home Office,
to the Metropolitan Board of Works, and the District Surveyor,
informing them of the intention to build on the ground, and pointing
out the serious objection to doing so unless all bodies be properly
removed and every precaution taken.
It appears there are nearly 20,000 bodies in the ground, closely
packed, and that many are near the surface.
CHALET BE NECESSITE.
The Chalet was completed and opened in June, 1882. Before
opening it the ground about the Chalet was paved, the Chalet Company
contributing £25 towards the cost of the paving.
