DENTAL CARE FOR THE MENTALLY HANDICAPPED
There has been further progress in the field of dental care for the
mentally handicapped. It was again found necessary to fill less decayed
teeth than previously, and so we have continued to concentrate on the prevention
of both tooth decay and gum disease. We have placed virtually the
same number of fillings, but these have been done in less than half the
number of sessions, thus although the same amount of patients were treated,
they only attended for a third of the number of visits needed in 1971. The
ratio of teeth filled to teeth extracted was 8:1 (10.2:1 in 1971). Over
fifty per cent of patients treated during the year had a subsequent course
of treatment.
