MALARIA. In the two cases of this disease notified, a man aged 25 and a girl
aged 7 years, it would appear that the infection was contracted abroad,
MEASLES. Of the 2,511 cases notified, 115 were admitted to hospital.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM. Seven of the 10 cases notified were babies born to
Hackney mothers and three were babies of women normally resident outside the
borough.
PARATYPHOID FEVER B. Three isolated individual cases were notified, a girl
aged 3 years, and two other females aged 15 and 31 years.
POLIOMYELITIS (Infantile paralysis). Some 17 persons were admitted to hospital
suspected to be suffering from poliomyelitis, but the diagnosis was confirmed
in only one paralytic case-

In addition, a boy aged four years, normally resident in Hackney was admitted
to a Hospital outside the borough and diagnosed as paralytic poliomyelitis.
The muscles of the spine and both legs were affected.

PUERPERAL PYREXIA. Of a total of 129 cases of Puerperal Pyrexia 128 were
associated with hospital confinements, and one case with a home confinement,
only 88 of the total number of cases related to Hackney residents.
SCARLET FEVER. Notifications of this disease numbered 92 as compared with 123
in the previous year and 166 in 1959; 19 cases were admitted to hospital.
