INFECTIOUS AND CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
The following cases of infectious and contagious diseases were notified:-
Dysentery 51 Pneumonia (Acute Primary) 30
Erysipelas 17 Poliomyelitis, Paralytic 1
Malaria 2 Puerperal Pyrexia 129
Measles 2,511 Scabies 27
Ophthalmia Neonatorum 10 Scarlet Fever 92
Paratyphoid Fever 3 Tuberculosis Ill
Pneumonia (Acute Influenzal) 18 Whooping Cough 34
The NINE DEATHS associated with notified cases of infectious disease were:-
Measles l
Pneumonia (Acute Primary)
Males aged 65, 70, 76 and 94 years
Females aged 61, 79 and 98 years 7
Pneumonia (Acute Influenzal)-Male aged 88 years. 1
The one death from measles was that of a boy aged one year and three months,
and the cause of death was given as
I a Septicaemia:
b Acute Emphysema, thoracic:
II Measles.
DIPHTHERIA. For the eighth successive year no case of Diphtheria was notified,
and since 1951 only one case has occurred in this Borough.
Four suspected cases were admitted to Hospital where the ultimate diagnoses
proved to be:-
Streptococcal pneumonia 1
Ludwig's angina 1
Tonsillitis 1
?Infectious mononucleosis 1

In England and Wales 51 cases were notified, of which 10 proved fatal. Diphtheria notifications and deaths in England and Wales for the past ten years:-

DYSENTERY (Sonne) Of the 48 cases notified, none were associated with day
nurseries. In the previous year 223 cases were notified and there were 168
notifications in 1959.
DYSENTERY (Plexner). Three cases were notified.

ENCEPHALITIS (Infective)
MENINGOCOCCAL INFECTION No cases of these diseases were notified.
