REFUSE REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL.
The work of refuse removal and scavenging is under the control
of the Borough Engineer and Surveyor, who has kindly supplied
details of the development of this service.
House refuse is collected once weekly, with the exception of
certain blocks of flats, hospitals, fire and police stations, schools and
business premises, where the frequency of collection is determined
according to the needs of the case. There was an extension of the
bi-weekly collection service during the year in the case of flats.
Refuse is disposed of by controlled tipping methods at Mucking
Creek, Essex.
The former method of dumping street sweepings in streets to
await collection was finally abandoned during 1934, the Council
having completed the purchase of a sufficient number of orderly
trucks, fitted with two covered dust-bins, which are emptied direct
into closed collection vehicles.
The eight cesspools in the Borough are now emptied by
mechanical vacuum suction machines.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA.
A summary of the inspections, etc., carried out by the Sanitary
Inspectors during the year appears on pages 135 to 148 of this
Report.
Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
Complaints of Nuisances.
During the year 1934 there were 4,236 complaints of nuisances
made to the Public Health Department and investigated by the
Sanitary Inspectors of the Borough. Defects or nuisances were
discovered in 3,213 of the complaints. Notices for the remedy or
abatement of these were served upon the owner or person responsible
under the above Act.
Drainage.
Two hundred and eight plans and notices to execute drainage
work and works of construction under the supervision of the
Sanitary Inspectors at 271 premises were reported to the Public
Health Committee during the year.
Smoke Abatement.
In addition to 149 observations of chimneys of large works in
the Borough made by the Sanitary Inspectors, 1,665 observations
on 152 premises were made by an Assistant detailed for that purpose.
