Seventeen intimation notices were served on the persons responsible
for the issue of black smoke in contravention of the Public Health
(London) Act, 1891, and the Public Health (Smoke Abatement)
Act, 1926. Eight statutory notices were served.
Infectious Diseases.
The occupied dwellings inspected during the year after
infectious disease numbered 1,749. Any nuisances or sanitary
defects found were dealt with under the provisions of the above Act.
Inspections other than on Complaint.
The number of inspections, other than those arising on complaint,
after infectious disease, and under the Housing and Town
Planning Regulations, made by the Inspectors during the year was
16,669, and the nuisances or sanitary defects found were dealt with
in the same manner as those on complaint.
Nuisances or defects found on inspection were remedied in most
cases on service of an intimation notice only. The total number of
such notices served during 1934 was 4,528. The number of statutory
notices served was 1,358; and summonses were issued in 50 cases.
Offensive Trades.
Two applications were received during the year for permission
to establish anew the business of a fur skin dresser. One of these
applications followed upon a prosecution by the Council of a firm
who had established such a business without the Council's consent.
These proceedings resulted in fines and costs totalling £39 9s. Od.
being imposed upon the three defendants. The subsequent application
for sanction to the carrying on of the business was refused,
the premises being unsuitable for the purpose. In the case of the
other application the Council's sanction was withheld, as the
applicant did not consent to the conditions that he should carry out
certain alterations to the premises and that the position should be
reviewed at the end of twelve months.
The offensive businesses carried on in the Borough at the end
of the year were—fur skin dressers 13, poultry slaughterers 3.
Eighty-one inspections were made of these premises during the
year and no contraventions of the By-laws relating to the conduct
of businesses were noted.

Borough and the accommodation for lodgers available therein are
