One case was reported in August of a woman who had died in
the London Hospital after an illness lasting only a few hours. The
clinical history was thought to be suggestive of food poisoning.
Material forwarded to the Ministry of Health for bacteriological
and chemical examination established the fact that the woman's
death was not attributable to food poisoning, and subsequent
investigation resulted in the death being ascribed, at the Coroner's
inquest, to shock from Acute Gastro Enteritis of influenzal origin.
Although it is evident that a great many enquiries must be made
which, in many instances, lead to no practical result, the general
effect of these enquiries at eating houses and other such places will
undoubtedly have a useful effect in improving the cleanliness and
conditions generally under which food is prepared.
