MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During 1932 there were 11 deaths of Hackney women from
causes directly connected with childbirth. This represents a deathrate
of 3.4 mothers per 1,000 total births.
The actual causes of death were:—
Puerperal sepsis 3
Ante and post-partum haemorrhage 2
Rupture of uterus 2
Ruptured ectopic gestation 2
Retained placenta (operative shock) 1
Acute gonorrhoea 1 endocarditis 1

The maternal deaths and death-rates in the years 1928 to 1932 in England and Wales, London and Hackney were as follow:—

The special arrangements made by the Borough Council for the
investigation of maternal deaths and cases of puerperal fever and
puerperal pyrexia are described on pages 36 and 37 of this Report.
SENILE MORTALITY.
The deaths which occurred in Hackney at 65 years of age and
upwards during 1932 numbered 1,132, and of these 524 were between
the ages of 65 and 75 years, 480 between 75 and 85 years, and 128
at 85 years and upwards. The annual mortality-rate of persons at
65 years and upwards is 5.3 per 1,000 inhabitants.
