As the bi-enniel epidemic of measles was due to appear during
the Winter of 1931-1932, the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee
decided to put into operation the scheme of co-operation
between the School Medical Authority and the Borough Councils
which was adopted throughout London in the previous epidemic.
The epidemic did not reach large proportions during 1931,
and no difficulty was experienced in paying prompt visits to the
cases which came to notice or in securing the removal of patients to
hospital.
Twenty-nine cases were removed to hospital during the year.
Influenza.—During 1931 there were 69 deaths in the Borough.
This is an increase of 46 on the deaths from this cause
registered during 1930. The annual mortality-rate from influenza
is 0.31 per 1,000 inhabitants, as compared with 0.26 for London.
Diarrhoea.—The total number of deaths from this cause was
46, and of these 37 were under one year of age. The number of
deaths from this disease in 1930 was 33. The annual mortalityrate
for diarrhoea and enteritis during the year is 0.21 per 1,000
inhabitants.
Whooping Cough.—The deaths from this cause during the year
numbered 8. This is an increase of 4 upon the number registered
during 1930. All of these deaths occurred in children under five
years of age. The mortality for Hackney is equal to 0.03 per 1,000
inhabitants, and that for London, 0.07 per 1,000 inhabitants. The
nurses of the Hackney District Nursing Association attended 7
cases and paid 149 visits.
Information was received from the headmasters and headmistresses
of elementary schools in Hackney of 622 cases occurring
among their scholars during the year.
