(1). In Ivydene Road three houses were pulled down and a garage erected by
the London General Omnibus Co. This is also a very industrial neighbourhood.
No. 7 District.
This District and No. 5 are among the most industrial areas in the Borough.
In streets such as Mare Street and Well Street, and roads such as Devonshire and
Tudor, 39 private houses in this neighbourhood have been partially adapted as
workshops, principally for the manufacture of boots and shoes and clothing.
One private house in Mentmore Terrace is entirely used for workshops, and four
private houses have been turned into factories, one in Mentmore Terrace for
the manufacture of clothing and furniture, and three in Mare Street for tailoring
and cabinet making. In addition there are many specially constructed premises,
such as factories in Mare Street for the manufacture of furniture, clothing, boots
and shoes; in Westgate Street for clothing, furniture, boots and shoes;
in Tower Street for similar trades, and in Ash Grove, where an extensive
manufacturing chemists' premises is situated. Workshops and factories have been
built on gardens in Shore Road (2), Tudor Road (3), Mare Street (6), Tower
Street (1), Well Street (6), Mentmore Terrace (2), Richmond Road (1), and
St. Thomas's Square (1). At the rear of 48 and 50 Well Street there is now
in course of erection a large garage on the gardens of these houses. In the
space between Tudor Road and King Edward Road a large clothing factory has
been built.
No. 8 District.
In Loddiges, Paragon, Darnley, Victoria Park, and neighbouring roads in
South Hackney, 39 private houses are partially used as workshops, most of them
very small. Private houses have been converted into factories in Well Street,
Victoria Park Road, Balcorne Street (Cottage acquired by the Hackney Borough
Council for extension of Electrical Department station), Paragon Road (Cottages
demolished for erection of Post Office building). Factories and workshops have
been built in gardens in Well Street, Lauriston Road, Victoria Park Road, Richmond
Road, Darnley Road, Wetherell Road, Fox's Lane (Garage built on waste
ground adjoining dwelling houses). Complaints were received from the tenants
of Balcorne Street in connection with the factory, No. 56, Lauriston Road (Dyers
and Cleaners), which abuts on to the gardens of several houses in Balcorne Street
and shuts out light and air. Also complaints have been received from the tenants
of Balcorne Street of smoke nuisances (since abated) from this same factory.
In connection with the garage in Fox's Lane, complaints have been made by the
tenants of the adjoining houses of noise at night from the running engines of
the taxicabs. Most of these conversions are partial, and with the exception of
Well Street are of a scattered nature. They do not at present materially affect
this neighbourhood (South Hackney) as a residential area.
No. 9 District.
This Homerton district is about equally industrial and residential. Only two
private houses, one in Tresham Avenue and one in Lower Clapton Road, are
partially used for workshops. The industries in this district are carried on in
specially constructed premises. A house in Lower Clapton Road and one in High
Street, Homerton, are used as offices in connection with factories built at their
rear. In an area bounded by Sutton Place, Churchyard, St. John's Church Road,
and Urswick Road, houses and gardens have been replaced by large factories (6),
box makers, and Cakeoma products, and piano factory, etc. In High Street,
Homerton, a Maternity Hospital (private) and house have been turned into
offices and a fur store in connection with the factory (fur dressers) built at rear.
The site of Tranby Place, High Street, Homerton, has been cleared and garages
and one workshop built. Factories and workshops have been built in gardens
(in addition to those mentioned above) in Tresham Avenue (2), High Street,
Homerton (3), and Lower Clapton Road (3). Most of the conversions have
