factories is a particularly large furniture factory. Lack of power to control the
erection of factories and workshops or the conversion of dwelling premises for
industrial purposes has led to complaints of various nuisances such as smoke, noise,
dust, etc., from neighbours in Leadale Road, Northwold Road, Stoneham Road,
rear of Windus and Belfast Roads, and Holmleigh Road.
No. 2 District.
Wellington Road, Rectory Road, Evering Road, and neighbouring streets
contain houses in which small workshops have been established, but the total
number of houses so used in this area is only 17. The principal article of manufacture
is clothing. 9 factories and workshops have been built in gardens in
Wellington Road (3), Amhurst Road (1), and Rectory Road (5). This neighbourhood
is not of much importance from a manufacturing point of view.
No. 3. District.
Rendlesham, Kenninghall and Clarence Roads are roads containing a few
private houses in which workshops have been established for such purposes as
tailoring and similar trades, but there are only 12 such workshops in this
neighbourhood. A house in Nightingale Road has been entirely converted into
a feather-duster making workshop, and a house in Downs Road entirely into a
shoe-making workshop. A private house is used as a factory for fancy leather
goods in Clapton Square, and another in Downs Road for embroidery. Factories
have been built in gardens in Clapton Square (3), Nightingale Road (1), Downs
Road (2), and Goulton Road (1). This neighbourhood, however, like No. 2
District, is not of much importance from a manufacturing point of view.
No. 4 District.
Small workshops, principally dressmaking and underclothing, have been
established in 14 private houses in Rushmore Road, Chatsworth Road and neighbouring
streets. An embroidery transfer workshop has been built in a garden in
Mayola Road, and a factory for dressmaking built in a garden in Powerscroft
Road. In addition there are 6 specially constructed factories, three of them for
the manufacture of furniture in the district. This, like the two preceding, is a
residential district.
No. 5 District.
Southgate, Kingsland, Middleton, Culford, Mortimer, and other roads in
this district contain a total of 51 private houses partially used as workshops,
niostly clothing, and some manufacturing furriers. Houses have been turned
into factories in Mortimer Road (1), Middleton Road (1), Southgate Road (1),
and De Beauvoir Road (1). Workshops and factories have been built in gardens
in Ufton Road (5), Queens Road (1), Southgate Road (3), De Beauvoir Crescent
(2), Culford Road (2), Glebe Road (1), Mapledene Road (1), Buckingham Road
(3), De Beauvoir Road (13), Hertford Road (2), Englefield Road (2), Downham
Road (3), Ardleigh Road (2), Bentley Road (1), Kingsland Road (11), Welbury
Street (1), Southgate Grove (7). Owing to the convenient position of this
neighbourhood as regards the City, it is one of the most industrial areas.
No. 6 District.
Lansdowne, Graham, Richmond, and other roads in this neighbourhood
contain a total of 45 houses partially used as workshops, in addition to many
specially constructed premises. Private houses have been turned into factories
in West Side (1), Lansdowne Road (5), Dalston Lane (2), Hackney Grove (6).
