The work of the Tuberculosis Officers is co-ordinated with the
Insurance practitioners on the lines set out in Memorandum No.
286.
(v) Cases in which the diagnosis is doubtful, who remain
in their homes, are kept under observation by Tuberculosis Health
Visitors and at the Tuberculosis Dispensaries. Other cases are
kept under observation at the Metropolitan and Victoria Park
Hospitals.
(vi) The examination and systematic supervision of home
contacts is carried out by the Tuberculosis Visitors and Tuberculosis
Officers; contacts are examined either in their homes or
at the Dispensaries, and are kept under supervision by the
Tuberculosis Visitors who arrange for re-examination when the
health of contacts appears to be failing in any way.
(Vii) Cases in which the diagnosis cannot be decided by dispensary
examinations are referred to the hospitals for observation
by the Specialists in the various departments. All such cases are
X-rayed and weekly examination of the sputum carried out. All
specific remedies such as Dreyer's Vaccine are given in hospital.
(viii) The forms of treatment that have given most beneficial
results have been the usual non-specific remedies. Creosote in
increasing doses has given good results at Victoria Park Dispensary,
and X-ray treatment of Tuberculous glands at the
Metropolitan Hospital. The Dreyer Vaccine is not now given.
(ix) Dental treatment, fillings and extractions are carried
out at the Victoria Park Hospital, and is limited to an expenditure
of £70 per annum. Arrangements for dentures have to be
made through charitable Associations.
(x) Nurses are supplied from the King's Home for Nurses
under an agreement with the Council.
Extra nourishment to the extent of £2 per 1,000 of the
population is supplied to Sanatorium cases, i.e., cases either
waiting for admission, or recently discharged from Sanatoria,
on the recommendation of the Tuberculosis Officer, and provided
that the home circumstances require this assistance.
