Table VI. shows the number of deaths and other statistics
concerning the mortality from the seven chief zymotic diseases,
viz., small.pox, measles, scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping
cough, fever, and diarrhoea. There were 19 deaths from smallpox
against an average for 10 years for 77 ; 117 from measles
against 58 ; 66 from scarlet fever against 82 ; 43 from
diphtheria against 25 ; 56 from whooping cough against 105 ;
46 from fever against 53 ; and 104 from diarrhoea against 123,
so that with the exceptions of measles and diphtheria the
mortality from these diseases was below the average of the
preceding 10 years.
It is certainly satisfactory to note the decrease in the
mortality from small.pox and fever as in 1881 and 1882.
The number of deaths from fever was above the average, and
in 1881 from small.pox it was much in excess. The mean
annual number of deaths in 1873.82, per 10,000 population,
was as follows :—From small.pox, 5.0 ; from measles, 3.7;
from scarlet fever, 5.0 ; from diphtheria, 16; from whooping
cough, 6.4; from fever, 33; from diarrhoea, 7.9. In 1883
the ratios were much smaller, viz., only 0.94 from small.pox;
5.82 from measles ; 3.28 from scarlet fever; 2.14 from
diphtheria; 2.78 from whooping cough; 2.28 from fever, and
