531 against 661 in 1882, or 2.63 per 1,000 population against
3 39 in 1882, which is decidedly satisfactory, as the number
was much smaller in the latter year than in 1881. The deaths
from tubercular affections include phthisis, scrofula, rickets,
tabes mesenterica (sometimes called consumption of the bowels)
and deaths caused by hydrocephalus or water on the brain in
children more than 1 year old. The proportion of deaths to
1,000 population was 3 31 from inflammatory diseases of the
lungs; from convulsive diseases of infants under 1 year, 0.78
per 1,000 population; and from wasting diseases of infants,
1.19 per 1,000 population. The percentages of deaths, from
zymotic diseases to deaths from all oauses, was 15.0; from
tubercular diseases also, 15.0 ; from inflammatory diseases of
the lungs, 18.8 per cent.; from convulsive and wasting diseases
of infants, 11 .17 per cent., which was above the average.
