The total number of births in Stoke Newington was for the
first time for several years below the number for the preceding
year, so that the percentage of births to all the births in the
District was 11.9 against 12.2 for 1882. In Stamford Hill Sub.
Distriot there were 357 births registered against 347 in 1882 ;
in "West Hackney 1,300 against 1,258 in 1882, in Hackney 2,667
against 2,609 in 1882, and in South Hackney 1,401 against 1,426
in 1882, being a small decrease. The percentages of births in
the Sub.Districts correspond pretty closely with those of the
populations in 1881, Stoke Newington and West Hackney being
siightly in defect, whilst the other Sub.Districts were slightly in
excess.

The deaths in Stoke Newington were slightly below the
number in 1882, viz. 369 against 379. The total deaths in
Stamford Hill Sub.District was 176 against 175 in 1882, in
West Hackney 659 against 625, in Hackney 1,646 against 1,698
and in South Hackney 695 against 628. These numbers do not
afford quite correct indications of the comparative mortality for
each Sub.District, as this year the deaths in hospitals outside
our District has been assigned to the Sub.District to which they
belong, instead of being lumped in the Hackney Sub.District as
deaths in the German Hospital. Hence we find that the number
of deaths in Hackney Sub.District is returned as 52 less than
