make a difference equal to about 0.l death per 1000 inhabitants,no
alteration is necessary in past calculations. The total number of
deaths for the year was 3,545 against 3,505 in the preceding
year, which considering the extraordinary healthiness of 1882
is very satisfactory. The number of births is 6,502, being an
increase of 79 above the number in 1882, and fairly corroborates
the estimated increase in our population, which I calculate to
have been 201,000 persons on the first day of July, 1883. As
our numbers increase, so the number of persons to an area
becomes larger every year, and is now as great as 51.1 to each
aere. Indeed it is really much denser, as we have no less than
568 acres of water and open spaces out of a total of 3,935 acres.
As the density of population forms a material element in the
mortality of a district, it is very satisfactory to find that our total
deaths are not larger. The number of births to 1000 population
this year was only 32.3 against 32.9 for last year, 33.9 in 1881
and 33.2 in 1871, so that it is possible that our population is not
quite so large as it has been estimated to be. The number of
houses on the rate books, however, supports the calculation
pretty fairly.
