ON THE SANITARY CONDITION OF
twelve months; 612 deaths occurred in the District;
260 of these were of persons who did not belong
thereto, and 199 persons belonging to the District died
outside its bounds. 157 inhabitants of the District died
in Poor Law Institutions, 12 in Lunatic Asylums, 14
in Fever Hospitals, and 88 in General and Special
Hospitals; thus 48.9 per cent, of the deaths of residents
occurred in Public Institutions (37.9 in St. Anne, 50.7
in Strand Sub-District); 26 8 per cent of the deaths
in all London were under similar circumstances.

Inquests were held on the bodies of 62 persons who
died in the District, of these 32 were residents, and 30
non-residents; 11 inquests were held in other parts of
London in respect of deaths of inhabitants of the
Strand District. The percentage of inquest cases to
total deaths among Strand inhabitants was 7.8; in
