ON THE SANITARY CONDITION OF
under the "Equalisation of Rates Act." The Census to
be taken in spring of 1896 will show which of these
methods is more accurate for this District.
The total number of Births registered in the
District was 612. This has to be corrected by the
addition of 14 births in Poland Street Workhouse, and
in Edmonton Workhouse, while 14 births in Bear-yard
Workhouse have to be placed to the credit of St.
Martin-in-the-Fields parish. The birth-rate is thus
24.91 per 1,000 inhabitants, as against 22.4 in 1894.
The birth-rate in London for 1895 was 30.5 per
1,000.
