32 ON THE SANITARY CONDITION OF
In one case it was necessary to commence legal proceedings
to prevent a place connected with the bakehouse
being used for sleeping purposes.
The "Eag-and-bone" shops have also been inspected
from time to time.* In one instance an attempt was
made to utilise the street and footway for purposes of
this business. This appeared to your Surveyor and
myself, to be a most objectionable practice, especially
in the middle of a street market. Discontinuance of it
was obtained by the removal of various goods to the
Greenyard.
Corent Garden Market.—Complaints have been
made from time to time in respect of waggons, loaded
with manure, standing for considerable periods in the
market, and adjoining streets. Steps have been taken to
prevent them remaining there, but there is no power
to hinder the owners of such waggons carrying back
to the country, on the top of the manure, empty fruit
and vegetable baskets.
The Bye-laws of the County Council do not apply
to the carriage of horse-dung manure; but it is clearly
necessary that the method by which manure is removed
from London should receive consideration. At one
time farmers were glad to pay for manure, but now
stable-keepers have sometimes to pay in order to
obtain its removal. The practice is for the farmer or
market gardener sending up produce to take back
manure in the empty wagons. This method is open to
