In the Spitalfields sub-District the births were 217, and the deaths 92;
in the Mile End New Town 160, and the deaths 133; in the Whitechapel
North 110, and the deaths 37; in the Whitechapel Church 65 and 180 (in
this sub-District the London Hospital is situated); in the Goodman's Fields
79 and 43; and in the Aldgate 49 and 42. The deaths have exceeded the
births in the Whitechapel Church District by 125; but from this number
the deaths of 102 non-residents must be deducted.
The deaths in the London Hospital have been 153. In the corresponding
Quarter of the previous year the deaths in this Institution were
166.
The deaths in the Workhouse have been 91. In the corresponding
Quarter of last year they were 88.
The deaths from epidemic diseases in the entire District have been 38;
viz.:—5 from measles, 2 from scarlet-fever, 1 from diphtheria, 14 from
hooping-cough, 10 from diarrhœa, and 6 from fever. Four deaths of patients
from this District occurred in the Homerton Fever Hospital; thus making
a total of 10 deaths from fever.
In the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the deaths from
epidemic diseases were 67, viz.:—1 from small-pox, 7 from measles, 9 from
scarlet-fever, 5 from diphtheria, 19 from hooping-cough, 16 from diarrhœa,
and 10 from fever. In addition to the 10 deaths from fever, there was 1
death in the Fever Hospital; thus making a total of 11 deaths from fever
for that Quarter.
Mortality of Young Children.
The mortality of children under 1 year of age was 77. This is 14.2
per cent. of the total mortality. In the corresponding Quarter of the previous
year, the rate of mortality of children under 1, was 20.9 per cent. of
the total mortality. In the Spitalfields sub-District the rate is 34.7 per
cent.; in the Mile End New Town 9.7 per cent.; in the Whitechapel
North 18.9 per cent.; in the Whitechapel Church 3.3 per cent.; in the
Goodman's Fields 16.2 per cent.; and in the Aldgate 28.5 per cent. In
the Goodman's Fields sub-District the deaths under 1 year were 7, and
the total deaths 43; in the Whitechapel North sub-District the total
deaths were 37, and those under 1 year were 7; while in the Whitechapel
Church sub-District the deaths under 1 year were only 6, and the total
deaths 180. This difference is explained by the deaths in the London
Hospital, in which Institution the deaths of children under 1 year are very

In the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the rate of mortality
of children under l year in the Spitalfields sub-District was 38.6 per
