North 33.3 per cent.; in the Whitechapel Church 6.7 per cent.; in the
Goodman's Fields 33.3 per cent.; and in the Aldgate 21.0 per cent.
Pauper Illness in the District.
The Medical Officers of the Union have attended, during the past
Quarter, 487 new cases of illness out of the Workhouse; including 5 of
measles, 2 of scarlet-fever, 2 of hooping-cough, 22 of diarrhœa, 9 of fever,
19 of febricula, and 1 of erysipelas. In the corresponding Quarter of the
previous year the number of pauper cases of illness was 580; including 7 of
measles, 4 of scarlet-fever, 21 of hooping-cough, 28 of diarrhœa, 4 of fever,
22 of febricula, and 6 of erysipelas. The total number of cases of illness
in the Workhouse has been 758; including 4 of measles, 4 of hoopingcough,
11 of diarrhœa, 25 of febricula, 9 of fever, 11 of erysipelas, and
31 of syphilis.
Cases of Illness in the London Hospital of Persons belonging
to this District.
By the courtesy of the House Committee of the London Hospital I
have been favoured with a return of all the patients belonging to this
District who have been admitted into the London Hospital during this
quarter. The total number of medical cases is 141; including 12 of acute
rheumatism, 10 of sub-acute rheumatism, 3 of rheumatic arthritis, 1 of
diarrhœa, 1 of hooping-cough, 3 of croup, I of erysipelas, 12 of bronchitis,
7 of pneumonia, 3 of pleuritis, 15 of consumption, 4 of lead poisoning, 1
(a brass-worker) of metallic tremor, 1 of pyrexia, 1 of febricula, and 2 of
Bright's disease.
Meteorology of Greenwich.
The returns of the Registrar-General show that the rain-fall in the
Metropolis during the Quarter has been 3.48 inches. "This amount," says
the Registrar-General, "is 2.3 inches less than the average amount in the
corresponding period of the preceding 60 years." One inch deep of rain-fall
on an acre weighs (allowing 10-lbs. to a gallon, which is the weight of a
gallon of distilled water) nearly 101 tons. During the corresponding
Quarter of last year the rain-fall was 6.23 inches. The mean temperature
of the air was 51.8°. In the corresponding Quarter of last year the mean
temperature was 50.7°. The hottest days during the Quarter were Wednesday,
the 28th June, Tuesday, the 20th June, and Wednesday, the 21st
June, when the thermometer in the shade indicated respectively 81.8°, 82.°6,
and 83.9°. The hottest day during the corresponding Quarter of last year
was on Friday, the 4th May, when the thermometer indicated 83.3°.
