REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
For the Quarter ending, 1st July, 1876.
To the Board of Works, Whitechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 1st July,
1876, the total births in the District were 680, and the deaths 527. The
excess of births over deaths has therefore been, during this Quarter, 153.
As the deaths of the non-residents which occurred in the London Hospital
are included in the mortality returns, a deduction thereof must be made
in order to estimate the correct mortality of the District. These deaths are
on an average 66 per cent., exclusive of sudden deaths and those resulting
from accidents, of the total mortality in this Institution; and, as the total
deaths are 153, 102 must be deducted for the deaths of non-residents,
thereby reducing the mortality of the District to 425, and increasing the
number of births above deaths to 255. In the corresponding Quarter of the
previous year the total births were 669, and the total deaths 558.
As all the sudden deaths and those resulting from accident occurring in the
London Hospital are included in the general mortality of the District, such
deaths are estimated as about equal to the deaths of those persons who were
resident within the district but which took place elsewhere.
