During the year 637 live births were registered, a decrease
of 2 under last year's total. The rate per 1,000 population was
16.7 compared with an average for England and Wales of 16.1.
Of the total number 40 or 6.2 per cent, were illegitimate. The
birth rate is less than the high recording of the previous two
years.
