During the Crisis the whole department was engaged
in various matters connected with A.R.P. A tent had
previously been erected at the front of the Council Offices
and for a week many hundreds of the general public
received instruction in the proper methods of fitting, etc.
Immediately on receipt of instruction the assembly of
the Civilian respirators was commenced and with the
very willing assistance of members of the public health
department, councillors and volunteers 32,500 were
assembled in under 24 hours and distributed to various
centres, from whence the Wardens delivered them to
houses in their respective areas.
OTHER MATTERS.
By permission of the Council I attended the conference
of the Sanitary Inspectors' Association at
Edinburgh.
During the summer a number of allotment holders
were circularised asking for certain steps to be taken
to prevent the breeding of flies in heaps of manure.
On a number of occasions advice was given as to
methods of extermination of earwigs, ants, crickets,
cockroaches, etc.
As the district is becoming more and more built up
the trouble due to vacant plots of land becoming dumping
heaps for rubbish tends to diminish. Nevertheless a
good deal of time has been spent in this direction.
A few years ago the partition walls of the men's
conveniences in Dukes Avenue were reconstructed and
faced with glazed tiles to prevent them being defaced
with objectionable writing. During the year I was forced
to ask for the ladies' compartments to be dealt with in a
similar manner and this was done.
