Clean Air Act, 1956
At the end of the year 3 Smoke Control Orders were in operation
involving 6,171 premises and 636 acres. The fourth Order involving a
further 1,768 premises in 131 acres was confirmed by the Minister in July
1963 and comes into operation on the 1st October, 1964. The survey of
the fifth zone referred to in last year's report was completed by the end of
1963 and affects 1,325 premises in an area of 141.36 acres.
Eighteen complaints were received and dealt with during the year.
The apparatus maintained by the Council for measuring atmospheric
pollution consists of 2 deposit gauges sited in Winchcombe Road (B) and
Buckhurst Avenue (C), filters for measuring the smoke in the atmosphere
and a filtration apparatus for estimating the sulphur dioxide content. The
latter two are sited at The Lodge. The recordings taken during 1963 were
as follows:—
