and milk. The Vendor was prosecuted under the labelling of Food
Order, 1953, and fined £50 with £5 5s. 0d. costs.
Tripe.
The sample was found to contain 0.9% of Sodium Carbonate and
considered unfit for consumption. The Vendor was prosecuted and fined
£10 with £10 10s. Od. costs.
Tripe.
This sample was procured from a different Vendor to that of the
sample above and as the Sodium Carbonate content was only 0.17%
no legal action was taken. The firm of Tripe Dressers concerned stated
that the excess soda was due to insufficient washing and that they were
taking precautions to ensure that thorough washing was carried out in
future.
Section 9—Sale of Food Unfit for Human Consumption
The following complaints of alleged foreign matter in foodstuffs
purchased locally were received:—
Dark substance in bread Finger bandage in bread
Maggot in bread Mould in bread
Foreign substance in ginger beer Plastic toy in milk
Tripe containing excessive soda
Appropriate warnings were given where the circumstances justified
such action. Legal proceedings were taken as noted above in respect
of a formal sample taken after the complaint in respect of the purchase
of tripe.
Inspection of Food

The following quantities of food found to be unsound, diseased or unwholesome and unfit for human food were surrendered and destroyed or so disposed of as to prevent them from being used for human food:—

The method of disposal is by burning in the Council's Refuse
Destructor.
Inspection of Food Premises
The inspections made under the Food Hygiene Regulations and
other statutory powers relating to food with the results of these visits are
shewn in Table 9.
