The 9 samples reported as being irregular were as follows:—
Steak and Kidney Pie.
Steak Pie.
Both these informal samples were taken at the request of the Food
Standards Committee which is considering whether statutory regulation
is necessary or practicable in regard to the composition of meat pies.
One sample contained 14.6% meat (calculated on the whole pie)
and the other 15% meat.
In both cases the Public Analyst regards the meat content as being
too low but did not quote a minimum in view of the investigation being
made by the Food Standards Committee.
Halibut Liver Oil Capsules.
The date of preparation as required by the British Pharmacopeia
was on the bottom of the container and not clearly stamped. The
manufacturers agreed to add to the label on the container a note drawing
the attention of the purchase that the date of preparation is stamped on
the bottom of the container.
Marmalade.
A sample submitted to the Public Analyst upon complaint by a resident
that the marmalade purchased from a local shop contained grit.
Analysis of the marmalade proved that it contained two small stones
and a small lump of rust. The manufacturers were unable to account
for their presence and the circumstances did not warrant further action.
Dietetic Orange Squash.
This sample was labelled "New Dietetic Orange Squash specially
prepared for Diabetics and others on sugar free diets. Licensed under
the Soft Drinks Order, 1947 for the use of persons suffering from
Diabetes." The Public Analyst pointed out that the word "New"
implied a recent product and that no licence is required as the Soft
Drinks Order 1947 was revoked in 1953. New labels had been printed
and these would be used as soon as existing stocks were exhausted.
Lemon Dairy Mousse.
The label on this sample did not comply with the labelling of Food
Order in that it was not clear and legible. Also, the term "Vegetable
Thickener" was used instead of a specific name or description of the
ingredient. The Manufacturers stated that on the new labels being
printed the term "Locust Bean Gum" would be used instead of Vegetable
Thickener.
Tea Cake Mixture.
A sample of sweetened flour together with raising ingredients, glace
cherries and colouring matter. The article did not include on the label
