Disposal of the Dead
No unused burial accommodation is available in Carshalton
churchyard. Interment is now effected only by re-opening existing
graves.
The Carshalton and Merton and Morden Joint Cemetery Board,
set up in 1943, acquired some 60 acres of land in Lower Morden for
use as a cemetery, which was opened in 1947. During 1953, 379 interments
took place there, of which 173 were from the Carshalton district.
The Council's mortuary in Mill Lane is provided with all modern
facilities. The number of bodies received there during 1953 was 138,
on all of which autopsies were performed. The accommodation is being
increasingly used for the reception of bodies from other districts, this
user now exceeding that from the Urban District itself.
National Assistance Act—Section 50
Three burials were arranged by the Council during the year under
Section 50 of the National Assistance Act, 1948.
