A further 14 samples were examined bacteriologically for suspected
food poisoning organisms in connection with food poisoning outbreaks,
all with negative results.
Biological Examination of Milk.
Twelve samples of milk were taken from producers' premises
within the district and submitted for examination for tuberculosis by
animal inoculation. One of these proved to be tuberculous. The Ministry
of Agriculture and Fisheries were informed so that appropriate action
with regard to the affected herd could be taken.
Milk and Dairits Regulations 1919—Regulation 20
This Regulation enables the Madical Officer of H;alth to prohibit
the sale for human consumption of infected milk capable of transmitting
infection to man or to require its treatment so as to render it innocuous.
Tne only instance of milk of this nature which came to notice was the
rtsult of biological examination of the milk from a local farm found
positive for tuberculosis, as mentioned above. As immediate investigation
into the herd to eliminate the offending animal was undertaken by
officers of the Ministry and since all the milk from the farm is effectually
pasteurised, no further action was called for.
Ice Cream

Ninety-four samples of ice cream were procured for bacteriological examination and the following table gives the results:

No. of Samples.Grade.
1234
9470177

The high proportion of samples satisfying the requirements of
Grades I and II continues the marked improvement in bacterial purity
of this commodity experienced in recent years.
Fourteen samples were submitted for chemical analysis by the
Public Analyst and all were found to comply with the standard of the
Ice Cream Order, 1951, as amended by the Order of 1952 which was
operative from the 7th July. This Amending Order reduced the necessaryfat
content of ice cream from 5% to 4%, and the milk solids other than
fat content from 7½% to 5%, whilst leaving the sugar content as before
at 10%.
Meat
All meat sold by retail is supplied from Ministry of Food depots
outside the district. No slaughtering within the district is carried on as
far as is known. Inspection of meat, therefore, is limited to that displayed
for sale or held by retailers prior to sale.
Approximately 3,000 lbs. of meat were found to be unfit for human
food.
