Water as it reaches the consumer is sampled as a routine by the
health departments of the sanitary districts supplied by the Company
on an agreed rota. The following is a representative report :—
Chemical analysis in parts per million.
Total solid matter in solution (dried at 180° C.) 2.11
Combined chlorine 17.5
Nitric nitrogen 8.4
Nitrous nitrogen 0.048
Ammonia, free and saline 0.012
Ammonia, albuminoid 0.017
Oxygen absorbed from permanganate in 4 hours at 26.7° C. 0.065
Hardness—by acidimetric titration—Temporary 78
Permanen 50
Total 128
Reaction for free chlorine 0.07
pH 7.8
The water was bright and clear and was slightly bluish in colour.
Bacteriological examination.
Action by free chlorine during transit of the sample was prevented
at the time of sampling.
Number of colonies per ml. developing upon agar in 2 days at 37° C. 0
Number of colonies per ml. developing upon agar in 3 days at 22° C. 0
Organisms of the coliform group absent in 100 ml.
Streptococci do.
C1. welchii do.
This water is of high organic purity and is similar in chemical composition to
previous samples from this source. The residual chlorine indicates that
treatment is being maintained.
The bacteriological condition is excellent and the water is suitable for the
public supply.
The waters are not plumbo-solvent.
The whole of the population of the district is supplied directly
from the mains and there are no stand pipes.
Drainage and Sewerage.
No extensions or replacements of the main sewerage system took
place in 1949.
Arrangements have been made for the Council to adopt all the
main sewer runs on the Woodcote Smallholdings, but adoption has not
yet taken place. One of these sewers is being extended for a length
of approximately 360 yards to Woodcote Grove House and work
commenced in December.
The whole of the developed area is soil sewered except for a small
part containing 17 properties in the southern end of the district.
