Sewage is pumped to the disposal works of the Croydon Corporation
in Beddington, except at various points on the fringes of the district,
where it is more conveniently drained to the sewage systems of
neighbouring authorities.
Surface drainage in the south is mainly by soakaways in the chalk;
elsewhere it is by surface sewers to the River Wandle.
Rivers and Streams.
Maintenance of the branch of the River Wandle which flows
through Carshalton was taken over by the County Council in April,
1947. The length from Hackbridge to the junction with the main
stream by Mitcham Works was dredged and cleared of weeds early in
the year.
No complaints were received by the Health Department during
the year.
Closet Accommodation.
All premises have W.C.s connected to the sewers except seventeen
in an unsewered area connected to cesspools.
Public Cleansing.
The arrangements for refuse collection were improved by the
acquisition of two new collecting vehicles of 12 cu. yd. capacity and
a secondhand freighter of 15 cu. yd. capacity. A regular weekly
collection from all houses was maintained except at Public Holiday
periods.
Disposal of refuse is by incineration at the Ccuncil's destructor.
Alterations and improvements were made to the plant in 1949 to
provide an increase in the rate of feed of refuse to the main conveyor,
to increase the amount of screenings by the installation of larger mesh
screen plates and so enable the rate of burning and consequently the
daily tonnage handled to be increased. Screenings and clinker were
disposed of to depots in Merstham, Tolworth, and Beddington. These
and other improvements now enable the works to handle 300 tons
per week without overtime.
Kitchen waste is still collected as pig food, the bins for which
are cleansed by steam.
Sanitary Inspection.
The following information supplied by the Chief Sanitary Inspector,
under Article 27 of the Sanitary Officers' Regulations, 1935, indicates
the action taken in sanitary inspection during the year.
