The homes of all incoming tenants of Council houses are visited
and where bed bug infestation is found or suspected, the household
effects are fumigated with H.C.N. before being unloaded into the
new house. Thirty-four vanloads of furniture were treated in
this way in 1937.
All Council houses are visited and supervised by the Council's
Estates Manager.
Mosquito Control.—Water places in the district, owned by
the Council, were sprayed on two occasions at periods when it was
most likely to destroy or prevent the breeding of mosquito larvae.
Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act, 1919.—As in previous
years a week's campaign was organised in the district during
National Rat Week by Mr. H. J. Spicer, the Chief Sanitary Inspector.
The district was posted with double crown posters ; chemists
and hardware merchants were supplied with rat destruction
literature and details for circulation; advertisements were issued
in the local press and the whole of the sewers in the district were
baited with rat bait.
Smoke Abatement.—Six complaints of alleged nuisance from
smoke were received and these were satisfactorily dealt with.
No legal action was necessary under the Public Health (Smoke
Abatement) Act, nor under the local bye-laws.
Schools.—The Department works in co-operation with the
County School Medical Service in the control of infectious disease
among school children, and in all sanitary matters affecting their
health. Policy is based on the recommendations contained in the
"Memorandum on Closure and Exclusion from School, 1927,"
issued conjointly by the Ministry of Health and Board of Education.
Twenty-seven inspections to school premises were made.
Cemeteries.—The Surrey County Council have promoted a
Bill, which if passed into law, will, inter alia, provide the district
with approximately 25 acres of land for burial purposes in Lower
Morden.
