Rodents
The use of sodium fluoroacetate for rodent control in treating the sewers continues to
operate. As previously indicated, this is a method of direct poisoning. In order to assess the
effectiveness of this treatment it has been thought advisable to undertake at least one prebait or
poison reading per year. In this way it becomes possible to decide on the quantity of poison
bait required at any particular manhole or in any particular area. It also enables unnecessary
baiting to be avoided.
In the case of private dwellings and business premises, Warfarin rodenticide continues to
be used.
The following is a summary of dwelling houses and business premises etc. treated during
1960:-
(1) Dwelling houses 619
(2) Factory premises 40
(3) Shops 36
(4) School canteens 94
(5) Miscellaneous 37
(6) Total charge for 2-5 above £137. 16s. 8d.
Factories
Haphazard development in past years has led to indiscriminate siting of industrial premises.
In certain areas factories operate adjacent to residential property, with the resultant complaints
from householders.
All too frequent is the householder who complains of the noise or smell from a nearby
factory which, in fact, was already functioning as a factory when the house was built and when
the occupier moved in.
Difficulties sometimes arise when, in order to meet the requirements of the Factories
Inspector, nuisances are created outside the building.
