During the year the van driver retired and staff re-organisation has enabled the department
to reduce the cleansing and disinfecting station staff.
The requirements of the service continue to be administered efficiently and effectively
without any loss of service to the public. This is in no small measure due to the manner in
which the men concerned carry out their duties.

Insect Pests
Although less than the figures for 1959, there was again a comparatively large number of
bug infestations reported. In many of these cases the infestation was slight and the incidence
is still only a small fraction of what it was before DDT insecticides were available, but there is
some concern at the possibility that resistant strains may be gaining ground.
Other pests which gave rise to most complaints were cockroaches, where 50 infestations
were dealt with and wasps: 23 nests were destroyed.
Inspections prior to removal to Council houses numbering 269 have been made on notification
by the Housing Manager and disinfestation was required in 15 cases, the furniture being treated
in a cyanide chamber.
