Formal Sample - Fruit Pie, Apple and Blackberry Filling:
A sample which, on receipt by the Public Analyst, exhibited bluish-green mould
growths. The mould was a species of Aspergillus which, in the opinion of the
Analyst, formed after sampling.
The vendor stated that due to error in rotation of stock the pie was sold after
the date stated on the wrapper.
A warning letter was sent to the vendor.
Formal Sample - Ham with Egg:
A sample of meat, cereal and egg labelled as 'Ham with Egg'. As the article
contains cereal the Public Analyst held that the description 'Ham with Egg* on the
label is not appropriate.
The vendor agreed to label the article 'Ham Roll with Egg'.
Formal Sample - Hamburger Flavoured Beef Slicing Meat:
An article incorrectly described as 'Hamburger Flavoured Beef Slicing Meat'
which, in the opinion of the Public Analyst, was a sample of beef sausage meat
containing 57 per cent of meat instead of not less than 80 per cent of meat.
The vendor agreed to amend labelling accordingly.
Informal Sample - Lemon Meringue Pie:
In the opinion of the Public Analyst, the illustration on the carton containing
this article is calculated to inform the purchaser that the pie ingredients
contain whole egg and whole lemon, whereas only the white of egg is used in the
form of dried egg albumen, and lemon flavouring in the form of lemon oil.
The manufacturer agreed to print a new design on the carton.
Formal and Informal Samples - Milk:
One formal and three informal samples of milk taken in the months of February
and March were found to be deficient in solids not fat to the extent of 1% in two
cases, 3% in one case, and a slight deficiency in the fourth case. In three
cases tests did not indicate the presence of added water. In one case a trace was
found to be present.
The vendors claimed that the deficiency in solids not fat was due to feeding
difficulties which are not uncommon at this season of the year.
Informal Sample - Pasteurised Milk:
A sample of Pasteurised milk taken in March was found to be deficient in solids
not fat to the extent of 1% and the presence of a small quantity of added water
was detected.
The vendor claimed that feeding difficulties accounted for the low percentage of
milk solids and assumed that the presence of added water may have been due to a
small quantity of water left in a filter pipe after steam sterilisation.
Informal Sample - Pasteurised Milk;
The sample was deficient in milk solids other than milk fat to the extent of
4 per cent.
A further sample proved to be satisfactory.
