The samples described as adulterated or irregular were reported upon by the
Analyst as follows and action was taken as indicated : —
Informal Sample - Carrot Tablets:
The product was labelled "Dehydrated Vegetables in concentrated tablet form
prepared by special evaporation to remove bulk and retain the essential nutrients.
Average daily requirements: 10 tablets."
The weight of 10 tablets is 606. grams and if only water has been extracted
during dehydration this would be the equivalent of about 6 oz. of fresh boiled
carrots. This quantity of carrots would be expected to contain about 5»000
micrograms of Carotene, whereas the 10 tablets analysed contained only 225
micrograms.
The Public Analyst held that the label was misleading, as the claim that the
essential nutrients are retained is not true, the tablets only providing one
twentieth of the essential nutrient B Carotene,
A new label submitted by the manufacturer of the tablets was approved by the
Public Analyst.
Informal Samples - The Admiral's Cheese with Port:
Ilchester Cheese blended with Beer:
Samples of compound cheese contaminated with mould growth due to the cheese not
being kept in refrigeration.
The vendor has given instructions to managers of shops regarding the storage of
such cheeses.
Formal and Informal Samples - Double Cream Cheese:
Two samples of cheese, one formal sample and one informal sample, contained
respectively 38.5 per cent and 37.5 per cent milk fat instead of 65 per cent milk
fat as prescribed in The Cheese Begulations, 1965.
As the vendor had ceased importing the brand of cheese in question pending
alteration of the label to comply with the Cheese Regulations, no further action
was considered necessary.
Informal Samples - Gorgonzola and Lactic Cheese:
Samples of full fat soft cheese not properly described on the wrapper in
accordance with The Cheese Regulations, 1965.
Letter sent to vendor's head office.
Informal Samples - Austrian Smoked Cheese and Smoked Cheese with Ham:
Due to a packet of full fat processed cheese being divided by the retailer, the
portion of the sample submitted for analysis did not have a proper description of
the cheese.
The retailers have agreed not to divide whole packets unless portions for sale
remain properly labelled.
Informal Sample - Crema Bel Paese (Cheese Spread):
In the Public Analyst's opinion the label of the sample is misleading, as
Bel Paese is a whole milk soft cheese and not a cream cheese and should not,
therefore, be described as 'Crema Bel Paese' with a sub-title 'Cheese Spread1.
As the words 'Crema Bel Paese' are a registered trade mark in Italy and because
of the difficulty in proving that the label was calculated to mislead, no further
action was taken.
