The Artificial Sweeteners in Food Regulations 1967 came into
force in two stages during the year and as a result cyclamate
sweeteners were permitted to be used in all foods except ice cream.
The Food (Control of Irradiation) Regulations 1967 became
operative in June and prohibit the use of ionising radiation in
the preparation of food intended for human consumption; presumably
because certain very important food bacteria are difficult to kill
by means of radiation and might grow more resistant.
The Toys (Safety) regulations 1967 became operative on
1st November 1967 and provide for the prohibition of toys which
contain cellulose nitrate (except ping-pong balls) and those on
which any paint film contains lead in excess of 1.1 per cent.
