Following the census on 30 selected manholes in each of these two.
areas in November, 1959, when it was shown that substantial numbers of
rats infested the sewers; the Ministry commenced the first poison treatment
in the "Sutton Area" on the 31st December, 1959, using the acute (quick
acting) poison sodium fluoracetate with damp sausage rusk as a base.
The second treatment in this area was commenced on the 29th March,
1960 the same poison being used but this time pin head oatmeal and water
were provided as a base.
The first treatment in the "Worcester Park Area" commenced on the
4th January, 1960, the poison used on this occasion was the acute poison
fluoracetimide with damp sausage rusk as a base.
The second treatment in this area was commenced on the 2nd April,
1960, again the poison used was fluoracetimide this time with pin head
oatmeal and water as a base.
On the 6th April, 1960, a post census of the 30 manholes in each
of the two areas was carried out and the result showed that all rats had
been exterminated.
The following is a summary of the results and treatments carried out
by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from November, 1959
to April, 1960.
