SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA
Water Supply. The water supply is mainly derived from the deep
wells in the chalk of the Sutton District Water Company situated at Sutton,
Cheam and Woodmansteme. A small area in the North Ward is supplied
by the Metropolitan Water Board.
A new reservoir, the North Looe, was brought into operation during
the year.
The water from all the wells of the Sutton District Water Company is
softened to under nine degrees of hardness. A high dose of chlorine in the
form of chloramine is administered to the water as a protective measure.
Most of it is removed later, leaving a small residual chloramine to pass out
to public distribution. The water is not liable to be plumbo-solvent.
Almost thirty five gallons of water per person per day were supplied
in 1960, of which approximately six and a half gallons were supplied to
trade, and twenty eight gallons were used domestically.
As opposed to 1959, rainfall in 1960 was 20.4 per cent, above the
average.
Samples of the raw and treated waters are examined daily by the
laboratory at the Sutton Works. Samples are also examined at monthly
intervals by the Company's Consultant Analyst, and copies of his reports
are received. Twenty four bacteriological and twelve chemical samples
are taken annually by five District Councils in the area of supply (two
bacteriological and one chemical per month, in rotation).
No action was necessary in respect of contamination during the year.
The supply from all sources has been satisfactory in guality and
guantity. All the dwelling houses have a direct supply from the public
mains, as follows:-
(a) Twenty five thousand, two hundred and twenty eight houses, with a
population of seventy nine thousand, eight hundred and fifty, are supplied
to a tap directly into the house.
(b) Five houses, with a population of ten, are supplied by stand-pipes.
The Sutton District Water Company supply twenty four thousand,
seven hundred and eighty nine dwellings, and the remaining four hundred
and forty four dwellings are supplied by the Metropolitan Water Board.
