From 1946 until the end of 1963, 384 houses have been
dealt with as follows:—-
Demolition Orders made 254
Agreements entered into with owners to "close"
or repair or Closing Orders made 39
Houses demolished as a result of formal or
informal action including those in clearance

Houses in four Clearance Areas declared 91
Persons who have been displaced 1.170
Housing Repairs
House-to-house inspections of the pre-1918 houses were
continued as far as possible and action taken to remedy
defects. It was found that increasing numbers of these
• houses were becoming owner/occupied and that some had
been renovated to a very good standard. Owner/occupation
is probably the best solution to the problem of these structurally
sound but outdated dwellings. There was still a
shortage of builders and owners often had difficulty in
finding one to enable them to comply with notices, as did
owners or occupiers wishing to carry out improvements.
