Housing—Demolition and Closure
The rehousing of people living in unfit houses continued
and as far as possible the empty houses were demolished.
A number however remained because their demolition
would adversely affect still occupied houses. The activities
of vandals and youths rendered these houses a source of
further nuisance and potential danger to adjoining occupiers.
A feature of the later stages of the programme has been the
acquisition by the Council of a number of unfit properties,
for the purpose of redeveloping the sites, without going
through the formal condemnation procedure. Confirmation
of the Railway Terrace Clearance Order (21 houses) was
received at the beginning of the year. Progress during ihe
year is summarised as follows:
