As recorded in the Section on Vital Statistics the number
of illegitimate infants born to women residents in Richmond
has fallen from 64 in 1945 to 54 in 1946. It is hoped that this
decline will continue as social conditions improve. The problem,
however, is likely to remain a large one since the management
of each individual case is almost always most complicated and
consequently very time consuming.
Details of the type of work carried out were given in the
Annual Report for 1945 and will not be repeated here. It should
be noted, however, that the figures given cannot give a real
value to the work performed. There is no doubt that the Social
Welfare Worker relieves many of these unfortunate women from
a great deal of suffering, and in many instances is able to improve
very considerably the future prospects of their infants.
