Infantile Mortality.
This rate is calculated on the number of deaths of children
under one year of age to 1,000 live births. In the year under
review 15 children under one year of age died giving a rate of 38
per 1,000 births. This is very satisfactory and compares favourably
with the rate for England and Wales, which is 58 per 1,000, and
that of London, which is 60 per 1,000.
It will be noticed that of the 15 deaths, there was one of an
illegitimate child. The mortality rate of these children is always
high and the 1 death referred to gives a mortality rate of 42 per
1,000 illegitimate births.
Ten of the 15 deaths are known definitely to have occurred in
the Borough. Pour deaths occurred in outside districts, while one
of the deaths was that of a newly born child whose body was
found in Richmond Park.
It will be seen from the table that out of 15 deaths, seven
occurred in the first week of life.
