The 501 deaths give a crude death rate of 13.1 per 1,000 of
the population. This crude death rate however cannot be used to
compare the mortality with that of other districts as the
populations of all areas are not similarly constituted as regards
the proportions of their sex and age group components.
The Registrar General supplies an areal comparability factor
and the crude death rate multiplied by this figure can then be
compared with the crude death rate of the country as a whole or
with the mortality of any other local area.
The corrected death rate obtained by the above is 11.2 as
compared with 12.4 for England and Wales and 12.3 for London.
The deaths occurred in persons of the following ages:—
15 under 1 year of age.
3 between 1 and 5 years of age.
4 „ 5 „ 15 „
13 ,, 15 ,, 25 ,,
35 ,, 25 „ 45 „
125 „ 45 „ 65 „
197 „ 65 „ 80 „
108 ,, over 80 ,,
It will be noticed that no fewer than 305 persons died over
the age of 65, i.e., more than half the total deaths, while 108 were
deaths of people over 80 years of age.
