SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA
During the twelve month period under review, 1,067 complaints were
received and investigated. A total of 11 ,261 visits and inspections were
made by the department (Appendix 'A'). In addition, it is estimated that
some 1 ,800 members of the public, including builders, trade representatives,
etc., were interviewed on health matters.
Most of the improvements effected following these visits were carried
out willingly on the advice of the Inspectorate. Only rarely did matters
have to be reported to the Council for authorisation of statutory action.
Rodent and Peat Control
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food reported that rodent
control in the Borough continued to be excellent. The use of sodium
fluoracetate in the sowers has been of great assistance to Mr. Murray, the
Rodent Operative, in achieving this result.
The widespread infestation of Feral Pigeons was virtually eradicated
with the use of the narcotic Alpha-Chloralose. The public approved of
this treatment, and only one verbal complaint was received.
Factories Act, 1961
During 1964- there were 86 factories, all using power, on the district
register. It was not found necessary to take any statutory action under
this Act; such defects as were discovered were remedied informally by the
managements.
Outworkers
At the end of the year the number of outworkers carrying out work in the Borough was 186. The work in which these people were engaged is itemised as follows:-
Wearing apparel manufacturers | 114 |
Artificial flower manufacturers | 4 |
Cardboard box manufacturers | 8 |
Lamp-shade manufacturers | 2 |
Upholsterers | 5 |
Brush manufacturers | 2 |
Footwear manufacturers | 19 |
Toy manufacturers | 32 |
Total number employed | 186 |
No contraventions of employment were observed and the statutory lists
of workers were received.
