Hairdressers' and Barbers' Premises.
Twenty-eight visits were made to hairdressers' and barbers' premises in
the borough, which were kept under supervision by the Sanitary Inspectors
and Health Visitors during the year, to ensure the required standard of clean'
liness being maintained in conformity with the bye-laws.
Middlesex County Council Act, 1944.
Twentyone visits were made by the Sanitary Inspectors concerning the
vehicles and/or storage accommodation of hawkers of meat, fish and vegetables.
Five persons and two premises were registered under section 279, Middlesex
County Council Act, 1944, during the year.

During the year licences were renewed authorising persons to station and
use three caravans for human habitation at Longford Close, Hampton Hill, and
a new licence was similarly issued in respect of a caravan situate at Cardinal
Vaughan School Playing Fields, Twickenham.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
(a) Notifiable Infectious Diseases
Diphtheria.
There was one case of diphtheria notified during 1948, a decrease of three
on the previous year. The case was admitted to hospital. There were no
deaths. The death rate for England and Wales was 0.00 per 1,000 of the
population.
Free supply of anti-toxin. During the year medical practitioners practising
in the borough could at any time obtain a supply of diphtheria anti'toxin
from the fire stations.
Diphtheria immunisation. At the end of the year it was estimated that
the percentage of child population immunised against diphtheria was as
follows:—
Under 5 years 59.6
Five to 15 years 75.9
