It is a source of satisfaction to note that no woman died in or in consequence of childbirth
during the year. The causes of maternal deaths during the past five years have been as
follows :—
1929 1930 1931 1932 1933
From Sepsis 2 — — 1 —
From other causes.2 1 1 3 —
Infant Deaths.
Nett deaths of infants under 1 year of age 31
Infant death rate per 1,000 live births 52
Infant death rate per 1,000 legitimate births 48
Infant death rate per 1,000 illegitimate births 137
Deaths from diarrhoea (under 1 year) per 1,000 live births Nil
The infant death rate was practically the same as that for the previous year and compares
favourably with 64 for England and Wales generally and with 56 for towns of comparable size.
While deriving satisfaction from these figures, it must always be remembered that calculating
the rates for a comparatively small town such as Twickenham, a small variation in numbers causes
a marked difference in the rates and conclusion should only be drawn for comparisons over a relatively long period.

This is shown in the table of death rates per thousand live births ot infants in Twickenham during the past 25 years.
